First off, Rocket Piano is a big package that includes books, audio files, videos, and software. The core of the product consists of 3 books, one for the beginner, a second for the intermediate player, and a third for the advanced player. Going along with these 3 core books are over 130 audio files and almost 60 video lessons. In addition to these core books, there are two “bonus” books included…one focusing on jazz piano and the other on gospel piano. The entire package is available in two forms…you can either download all of it immediately upon payment, or you can opt ot receive it in the mail. One interesting thing here is that the downloadable version is quite a bit cheaper (making this package very affordable in my opinion)…
My Detailed Review:
I admit I’d never heard of this product until fairly recently, and I’d also never heard of the author (Ruth Searle). But a little research turned up some nice info on Ruth…turns out she has won numerous composition awards in both New Zealand and Australia (I think she’s from New Zealand if memory serves), and she is quite an accomplished classical pianist.
Let me give you the bottom line here first and the primary reason why I gave this course such a high recommendation…the truth is that many of the “learn piano” courses on the market assume some knowledge and background in music. They will *say* they don’t, but after using many of these courses for a day or so, it becomes quite obvious that they’re not for the total beginner. And while this course has its flaws, I can honestly tell you that Rocket Piano is an excellent, excellent choice for a total beginner who knows nothing about music theory or piano playing. And as I said, it’s one of the very few courses that can even pull that off…
Note – if you’re an intermediate piano player or an advanced level pianist, don’t get this course. There *are* intermediate and advanced modules, but they’re not nearly as good as some others on the market.
One of the best things about this course is the video aspect to it. The beginner’s book is great and it’s quite comprehensive. The audios that accompany that are also quite helpful. But for a complete beginner, being able to watch and see a technique demonstrated is very powerful! Ruth and the publishers obviously understand that, and the video component is a huge part of this course.
The software that comes with the course is also helpful, but I wouldn’t consider it an essential part of the course. One is a metronome of sorts (a metronome helps you keep time and rhythm), and the other two are actually games designed to help you learn…One of the games helps you identify notes, the other to identify written chords.
I have to tell you as well that cost also played a factor in me giving this such a high rating… for goodness sake, the downloadable version of this course is less than $40. For what’s included in this package, that’s a really low price.
Bottom line, if you’re a beginner who’s looking for a comprehensive yet affordable course on playing the piano, I highly recommend this course.
